Honorable City Council Members,
The San Mateo County Supervisorial District Lines Advisory Commission met on Sep 20, 2021.
It is my opinion that each city/town be in one supervisorial district to the maximum extent possible. If a city needs to be divided, it is my opinion, the supervisorial boundaries should follow the city district boundaries. South San Francisco, Redwood City and Menlo Park have district elections.
Five cities in San Mateo County that have two supervisorial districts. The other 15 are in one supervisorial district. The following cities are in two supervisorial districts.
* Daly City and South San Francisco are in Districts 1 & 5.
* Belmont is in Districts 2 & 3.
* Redwood City and Menlo Park are in Districts 3 & 4.
Many (most) people do not know what districts they live in, let alone their elected representatives. My recommendation does not solve this problem, but it does make it easier for the public to have a better understanding of the jurisdictions. When government makes things confusing, it drives the public away and the public is less trustful about it government and its leaders.
I do not know if there are any advantages or disadvantages for a city to be in more than one supervisorial district.
Daly City Council Member Ray Buenaventura and San Mateo County Board of Education Trustee Hector Camacho, Jr and I made public comments favoring cities/towns be in one supervisorial district. I did not know they were going to make public comment.
If you have preferences, please make them know to https://smcdistrictlines.org/contact/.
Thank you for your service to your cities and communities.
Tom
