City Council Members,
In light of the upcoming discussion concerning Menlo Park capital improvements, I would like to suggest that bike parking throughout the city be evaluated. Many times biking with friends or my family around town there is insufficient space to lock up our bikes and/or it is not adjacent or convenient to our destination.
The city has a laudable goal of encouraging active transport, but we need to provide spaces to secure a bike as part of that effort. Along Santa Cruz Ave there are some bike racks, but not many and they can generally accommodate two bikes. Outside of the city council chambers there are zero bike racks - you have to head over to the police station to find a bike rack. I used it recently during an evening event and found that the area with the rack felt secluded and underlit. I would be reluctant to park there again.
A safe and secure bike parking space should be well lit, offer spots for multiple bikes, and be close to the destination. If we truly want to encourage our populace to feel excited about biking around town, we need to provide a space to ensure their bikes are safe.
Thank you,
Meredith Bergin Bailey
