Councilperson Nash:
Dear Betsy,
Thank you for your response I believe the state of California has improperly (illegally?) forced a mandate on cities; requiring them (us) to build housing that does not meet the needs of OUR citizens.
For example Teachers (because of their salary levels) may not qualify for low income housing, as planned!
Our city should not be threatened with fines for failure to build housing that is not appropriate, simply to meet the wishes of Sacramento politicians.
The money spent to implement this poorly thought out plan should be spent on a legal challenge to this state run housing "LAW".
In the recent past, the city and state was wrong to implement an oppressive gas ban, that was held to be illegal.
I highly recommend that Menlo Park, and other cities, challenge this "law" in court, instead of forcing a plan to damage Downtown Menlo Park.
Please place this proposal on the agenda at the next public meeting:
The City of Menlo Park should challenge in court the legality of this state imposed housing mandate, prior to going forward with the plan to build on city parking lots, which is opposed by local citizens.
Please put this to a vote at the next meeting.
Respectfully,
Michael DeMoss
