Elder Ave - Hillview Middle

Good Morning,

I was unclear who to email in this circumstance, so Ive copied all who I hope would be helpful.

My family and I recently moved onto Elder Ave, directly across from Hillview Middle School in Menlo Park. Its a lovely street and neighborhood, but car speeds were a concern from day one. Elder Ave is a cut-through street between Valparaiso and Santa Cruz. I believe both residents and non-residents of Menlo Park use it as such. I assume its slated for 25 MPH, but the average speed is anywhere from 35 - 50. It also hosts the entrance to the Hillview Middle. Unlike other schools in Menlo Park, there are no speed bumps or flashing signs on Elder. I cant express to you how many times I have almost witnessed a speeding car hit a child. The Hillview field is used for several hours after school; children and families consistently cross this street. So there is a need for more street safety during all hours. I would consider Hillview the heart of Menlo Park- incredibly popular, used and loved by all.

This morning, we had our electrician doing some work on the house. He asked what the speed limit was and commented that he was appalled by drivers speeds around children. The woman who lived in our home was very old and did not have small children. Im not sure she was ever aware of the issue. Several friends also live on Elder, and all have made comments/complaints to me.

As a mother of three, Im telling you this is a liability for the school, street, and Menlo Park. Im not one who typically writes these emails; however, my gut told me I needed to at least try. Action needs to be taken here, or I fear for the worst.

I am happy to answer any questions or assist in any way I can. I look forward to hearing back from you.

My very best to you in the New Year,

Lindsay Nalevanko
