Dear Members of the Menlo Park City Council,
I am writing as a concerned and engaged resident who recognizes the urgent need to address the housing challenges in our community. The thoughtful and sustainable development of new housing is essential to ensure Menlo Park remains vibrant and inclusive for future generations. However, I urge you to reconsider the proposed use of downtown parking lots for high-density housing and instead explore relocating these plans to the Civic Center area.
The downtown parking lots are vital to the functionality and character of our city’s commercial hub. These spaces serve as essential infrastructure for local businesses, which depend on accessible parking to attract and retain customers. Furthermore, these lots host cherished community events, such as the Sunday farmers market, which fosters connection, supports local vendors, and enhances the cultural fabric of Menlo Park. Removing these spaces would compromise the economic health of downtown businesses and diminish the community-oriented vibrancy that residents deeply value.
The Civic Center area offers a viable alternative for housing development that aligns with our city’s goals while minimizing harm to the downtown core. By redirecting proposals to this location, we can balance the pressing need for housing with the preservation of the economic and social vitality of downtown Menlo Park. The Civic Center area is well-suited for a thoughtful housing development plan that integrates seamlessly into the broader urban landscape.
I understand that balancing the diverse needs of our community is a complex challenge. However, I am confident that with careful planning and input from residents, we can find solutions that serve everyone’s best interests. I encourage you to prioritize protecting our downtown area while ensuring we meet housing goals in a way that strengthens Menlo Park as a whole.
Thank you for your time, dedication, and commitment to our community. I look forward to your leadership on this important issue.
Sincerely,
Nagendra Jayanty
Menlo Park resident
