Support for Full-Size Sports Field, Lights, and Community Amenities in Parkline (SRI)

Dear Menlo Park City Council,

I am writing to strongly advocate for the inclusion of a full-size playing field and additional community-focused amenities in the Parkline (SRI) development project.

As a parent and resident of Menlo Park, I witness daily the challenges our community faces due to limited access to fields. My children frequently have to share crowded practice spaces with multiple teams or travel up to 30 minutes to neighboring cities just to find adequate facilities. With the increased density brought by the SRI project, the demand for local, accessible recreation spaces will only intensify.

I urge the City Council to prioritize the inclusion of a full-size 11v11 soccer field with turf for year-round usability and lights to ensure safe evening play. This location, being one of the few development parcels in Menlo Park not directly surrounded by housing, presents a unique opportunity to create a field with minimal impact on neighbors while serving as a vital resource for sports players and other community activities.

Investing in our youth is essential. Research has consistently shown that limited access to sports facilities contributes to a significant drop in youth participation by age 13. By expanding field availability, we support the physical and mental health of our children, fostering active and engaged lifestyles.

Additionally, Menlo Park deserves substantial community benefits from this project. Comparable developments have offered community contributions exceeding $100 million. Our city should expect a similarly meaningful commitment, including bike paths, recreational spaces, and gathering areas that enhance the quality of life for all residents.

Thank you for considering the needs of Menlo Park’s families and children as you evaluate this project.

Sincerely,

Sara Herman
