Dear Mayor Taylor and City Council members,
We’ve now had two very wet years in a row, clocking in at 132% higher than normal on the Peninsula, so it’s a perfect time for you to restore our grass lawn in Fremont Park.
You have the possibility to quickly convert the ugly tanbark that mars the look of our downtown, by replacing it with a lush green lawn, as we enjoyed for decades, regardless of the cycle of wet and dry years that we’ve always had.
When people stand on anywhere on Santa Cruz Avenue and look toward Fremont Park, they see a mess.
The tanbark is unsightly and uninviting. You can’t sit on it, and it isn’t even nice to walk on, let alone look at.
None of the surrounding cities, all of whom share our weather, have large areas of tanbark in key locations in their downtowns.
Take a look at Los Altos, a city of about the same size as our own. It’s beautifully kept up, with flowers and plantings, etc.
No wonder their downtown shops attract more people than ours.
Simply removing the tanbark and planting grass in the front half of Fremont Park, making it match the back half of the park, would go a long way toward beautification of the downtown.
And if you take this opportunity now, we’ll have a healthy lawn for summer concerts and for our summer faire, which is a big draw to our downtown and which many of us have missed and are hoping for its return this summer.
Sincerely,
Cherie Zaslawsky
