Dear City Council,
My name is Karsten Iwers, and I am the owner of Harvest Furniture at 639 Santa Cruz Avenue.
I am asking for your consideration of the opinion of over sixty merchants on and around Santa Cruz Avenue and re-open the street as soon as possible.
The street closure has been devastating to Harvest Furniture in Menlo Park. While revenues are roughly 20% above 2019 numbers for our Redwood City and Los Gatos locations, our Menlo Park store is experiencing a decrease of well over 25
% during the same period.
Locals and visitors cannot access our business conveniently and have avoided the street altogether. Moreover, visibility of our business is severely impacted as the surrounding restaurants have erected structures and placed umbrellas on
the street, which block the view of Harvest almost completely. Exposure to passing vehicles is non-existent.
Other than some restaurants, virtually all businesses in downtown Menlo Park have expressed similar sentiments in surveys and in recent meetings.
We understand that residents enjoy walking in the middle of the street, but our residents also enjoy a vibrant downtown business community that renders many valuable services to them.
