To the Menlo Park City Council,
My name is Sarah Lee, a senior community organizer with the Immigrant Legal Resource Center. We educate and provide expertise on immigration law, advocate for fairness and immigrant rights, and support the capacity of local immigrant rights leaders and organizations including in San Mateo County.
I write to share my concerns about the revisions to Title 11 of the municipal code in particular sections: 11.24.070 Removal of vehicles parked for 72 or more hours and 11.24.075 Removal of vehicles parked in violation of oversized vehicle restriction.
These revisions target already vulnerable immigrant communities who have existing barriers in accessing services they need for long-term permanent housing. Are there plans for alternative safe parking sites? How much will it cost the city to enforce these revisions, and shouldnt these resources be better used to support the children and families to transition to stable housing? In a heightened anti-immigrant climate were entering, the city should be committed to treating immigrant families with dignity, not further destabilizing our neighbors who call Menlo Park home.
