Honorable Menlo Park City Council,
I support building new affordable homes downtown and I urge you to do the same on January 14th.
I am a homeowner/resident of Menlo Park since 2001 and have been a business owner in downtown Menlo Park for over 17 years. Over that time, I have heard the arguments over and over both by other business owners and by local residents against the development
of downtown. Mostly, these arguments seem to be about parking and the need for easy access to the stores. And I agree. There does need to be easy and accessible parking for folks who want to visit the downtown area. I believe we can do much better than we
are currently doing with the existing parking which is often full, not easy to navigate and horribly outdated.
In addition, I am a biker and a walker. I feel that we MUST make downtown more bike and pedestrian friendly. There must be more safe ways to get to downtown without having to put your life in danger (which I feel I do daily as I ride or walk from Linfield
Oaks to downtown).
Putting housing - especially affordable low-income housing - in downtown close to shops, businesses, restaurants and transit, makes a ton of sense and will help revitalize the downtown area. Please do not let the vocal minority who will argue for the status
quo win the day here. Please explore this option as a viable alternative.
Please vote "yes" to new affordable homes downtown on January 14th.
Sincerely,
Tim Watson
